Fibromyalgia
Widespread pain, fatigue and unrefreshing sleep that carry on even when test results are normal. A real condition, with a neurobiological basis and a structured approach.
What fibromyalgia is
Fibromyalgia is a condition of widespread, persistent musculoskeletal pain, often accompanied by fatigue, unrefreshing sleep, stiffness and difficulty concentrating, the state usually described as brain fog.
It is not an imaginary illness, and it is not a question of attitude. It is a genuine disturbance in the way the nervous system processes and amplifies pain signals.
Why the tests come back “normal”
In fibromyalgia, X-rays, blood work and MRI scans usually come back normal because there is no structural damage that would explain the pain. What has changed is how pain is processed in the central nervous system, a phenomenon known as central sensitization.
The body’s alarm system ends up calibrated too sensitively, so that stimuli which would not normally hurt are experienced as painful. A normal test result therefore does not mean nothing is wrong. It means that particular test does not measure what is happening.
Common symptoms
- Widespread pain in several areas of the body, lasting months
- Fatigue that does not improve with rest
- Unrefreshing or broken sleep
- Stiffness, especially on waking
- Difficulty with memory and concentration, or brain fog
- Heightened sensitivity to touch, light or noise
How the IDENTA Model approaches it
At IDENTA we start with an integrated medical and psychological assessment that organizes your history, rules out whatever needs ruling out and builds a hypothesis about the whole picture, rather than splitting it between specialties.
From there we work on regulating the nervous system through pain neuroscience education and autonomic and sleep regulation, on evidence-based psychotherapy to reduce distress and the cycles of fear and avoidance, and on graded movement. Neurostimulation is considered only where it is clinically indicated.
All of this comes together in the IDENTA Model v1.0, with measurable objectives and regular follow-up.
What you can expect
- A clear explanation of the mechanism behind your pain, without it being played down.
- An interdisciplinary plan with concrete objectives that get reviewed.
- Improvement aimed at restoring function and quality of life, not simply at putting up with it.
This information is provided for general education. It does not replace an individual medical assessment and is not a diagnosis. If you live with these symptoms, an initial assessment allows your case to be evaluated as a whole.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a cure for fibromyalgia?
It is more useful to talk about management and improvement than about a definitive cure. The nervous system is plastic and can be recalibrated. With a structured, sustained approach many people achieve substantial reductions in pain and recover function.
If my tests are normal, why does it hurt?
Because the pain of fibromyalgia originates in how the nervous system processes pain, a process called central sensitization, and not in visible damage. Imaging and laboratory tests do not measure that mechanism.
Is fibromyalgia psychological?
Not in the sense of being invented. Factors such as stress and sleep do play a part, because mind and body form one integrated system, but the pain itself is a real biological experience.
